The 41st Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE) welcomed its first Dexter show on Oct. 13. The NILE is a very large livestock show that was a great setting to introduce our breed to a variety of people.
As an added benefit, the Grand Champion Female and Grand Champion Bull of each breed at the NILE received an invitation to show at the Agribition, Canada’s largest and most prestigious livestock show, in Regina, Saskatchewan. Entry for the Supreme Challenge is by
invitation only, and cattle from just three American shows are included. For Dexters to be included at this level is an honor.
Several hundred school children from Billings and the surrounding area came through on Monday and just loved the “cute cows.” All of the breeders/showers were kept busy answering questions throughout the three days Dexters were there.
It snowed 18 inches the day before the show, but the cattle were already in place in a nice, dry barn. That kind of weather is unusual for October! Then 24 hours later, the snow was gone.
The judge for the show, Randy Daniel of Colbert, Ga., had judged Dexters once before in California. It’s quite a rarity to find an experienced Dexter judge. He was very complimentary of the overall quality of the animals shown.
As usual at a Dexter show, all the exhibitors helped each other with whatever needed to be done. The result was a very smooth show.
A huge thank-you goes out to Wendall Vannatter, the Dexter breed superintendent. He spent many hours before, during and after the show attending meetings and taking care of all those little details that will make or break any event. He was the spearhead who got Dexters into the NILE and made sure we made a good first impression.
If a herdsmanship award would have been given, the Dexter aisle would have won hands down. The exhibitors took great pride in keeping their area swept, uncluttered and eyeappealing to visitors.
For those who do not like to or are unable to find the time to halter-break animals, the NILE has a Range Cattle Pen Show with a Dexter division with pens of three animals in off-the range condition. No washing, clipping or leading is allowed.  This is another great way to promote our breed in a different format.
The 2009 NILE will be Oct. 10-17. The specific dates of the Dexter show have not yet been set, but mark your calendars and attend if you can.
The NILE is a very hospitable venue; we need to keep the Dexter show alive and growing.
