Important PHA Update 9-16-2009

PHA Testing Update - September 16th, 2009

Until September 10, 2009, all animals identified in the ADCA Registry as carriers of the Dexter PHA mutation (PHACD) were descendants of Aldebaran Priapus- in addition to Priapus himself, who had tested earlier as PHACD. Since Priapus’ sire, Trillium Cluny, tested as a PHA non-carrier (PHAF), his dam, Woodmagic Wheatear, must have been an obligate PHA carrier unless the mutation originated in Priapus himself. If the latter were true, there would be
no PHACD Wheatear descendants that don’t descend from Priapus.

On Thursday, September 3, a breeder in the U.S. received a PHA test report that revealed a PHACD cow that is not descended from Priapus. The cow, however, is descended from one of Wheatear’s daughters, Cranworth Yanna, who occurs on both sides of the pedigree of this cow’s dam.

Now that this additional source of Dexter PHA has been identified, it is logical to conclude that Wheatear was, indeed, an obligate carrier of PHA and that she introduced the mutation into the North American Dexter population. For the purpose of PHA testing, it is important to consider the Dexter population most at risk to be carriers of PHA in North America are those animals who are descended from Woodmagic Wheatear, not just those descended from Aldebaran Priapus.

New ADCA Registration Requirement

1. All bulls registered by the ADCA after December 31, 2008, shall be genotyped and have the report on file in the ADCA Registry office prior to the completion of their registration.
2. Existing herd sires (all bulls used for breeding) shall be genotyped and have the report on file prior to the registration of any calves sired by those bulls and born after December 31, 2009.
3. All genotyping shall be done at the owners expense by the ADCA's designated Laboratory.  (Texas A&M) Genotyping done by other Labs will be accepted if:
  A.  When the outside test results are fully compatible (for determining parentage) with the testing by the ADCA Lab of contact.
  B.  Test results must be submitted directly from Lab facility to Lab facility not by/from individuals.
  C.  Texas A&M will charge the owner a processing fee of $5 to enter outside test results into the ADCA database.
  D.  Once on file at Texas A&M, Texas A&M will send a Genotype report to you, to send to the Registar.  If this is not followed, it will not be accepted.

Notes:  The meeting was called to order December 20th at 10:05, there were 3 members present.  Anne Feltus was appointed secretary and recorded the minutes.  The proposal passed with a vote of 111 in favor and 72 opposed.

A follow up meeting was held on Sunday the 28th to tally the additional proxies which were received with a valid post mark but not available for the initial count. I felt this was critical since the time frame was short and the time of year also caused delays. The SOP on meetings will include more realistic time frames for the postmark date vs. meeting date. There were 25 proxies opened and tallied at the meeting. 12 were in support of the program and 13 were opposed. The final tallies of the two meetings is 123 in support, 85 opposed 7 were postmarked after the 17th and were not tallied. All proxies will be archived with the secretary.

President

A. Breeders are encouraged to have all herd sires/breeding bulls genotyped as soon as possible rather than waiting for the deadline.
B. Instructions and application forms are available as PDF attachments which can be downloaded here.  They are also available by USPS mail from Pam Malcuit, 17087 Dixie Farms Lane, Iola, TX 77861.  Be sure to specify the number of animals to be genotyped if requesting applications via USPS mail.
C. The current cost of the genotype test is $25 per animal.  The person submitting the application will receive two official copies of each report from the lab.  One copy of the report must be mailed to the ADCA Registar, Chuck Daggett, 4150 Merino Avenue, Watertown, MN 55388.  If registering an animal on-line, include the Accession number of the animal's report in the comments field at the bottom of the application and mail the report to Chuck Daggett.  If registering an animal by USPS mail, include the animal's genotype report with the registration application.
D. Please note that there must be no discrepancy between the information on the genotype report and the animal's registration or registration application.
